Shedding New Light on Graphic Novel Collections: A Circulation Collection and Collection Analysis Study in Six Middle School Libraries

Gavigan, K. (2014). Shedding new light on graphic novel collections: A circulation collection
and collection analysis study in six middle school libraries. School Libraries Worldwide,
            (20)1, 97-115.
Federal and state regulations on school libraries have some great effects on library collections. The Common Core Standards proved to help promote the acquisition of graphic novels, as this type of media supports many different learning needs including ESL education needs. Graphic novels have increased in sales and are no longer considered an “underground art form,” making this media more relevant for school library collections. The appeal to readers is also very broad as people of a wide range of genders, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds tend to enjoy them. Vender-driven collection methods have been problematic for patrons, as many of the novels shelved under this method have been widely disbursed throughout the library. It is much easier for patrons to access these materials when desired if they are all collected into one area of the library.
